Corrections Program
The one-year certificate and associate degree programs are designed to meet the educational requirements set by the Michigan Department of Corrections. The student must have a minimum of a C- (1.7) grade in each corrections course.

One-Year Certificate

This program is intended to prepare students for employment, and therefore has not been designed to transfer to senior institutions. Some of the courses, however, may be transferable. For clarification, see a WSCC advisor.

The Michigan Department of Corrections gives hiring preference to candidates who have completed a degree program or occupational certificate in corrections.

However, any combination of five courses (15 credits) from the following list will meet the minimum educational requirements established by the Michigan Department of Corrections:

  • General Psychology Introduction to Sociology
  • Child Psychology Sociology of the Family
  • Educational Psychology Social Problems
  • Abnormal Psychology Introduction to Criminal Justice
  • Social Psychology Introduction to Corrections
  • Correctional Institutions Client Growth and Relations
  • Client Relations in Corrections Legal Issues in
  • Corrections Introduction to Social Work Juvenile Delinquency

The courses listed are those currently offered by WSCC which fall into at least one of the categories specified in the MDOC requirements. Students remain responsible for satisfying all prerequisite requirements.
